Non-Toxic Clothing 101

Non-toxic clothing is made without harmful chemicals that can affect your health or irritate your skin. This includes things like BPA, PFAS, formaldehyde, and certain dyes or finishes. At Losano, our fabrics are free from endocrine disruptors and intentionally designed to be safe for both you and the environment—no compromises, just clean comfort.

Your skin is your body’s largest organ—and what you wear every day matters. Toxins in clothing can be absorbed through your skin, inhaled during wear, or released into the environment when washed. Over time, repeated exposure to these chemicals may contribute to hormone disruption, skin irritation, or other health issues. That’s why choosing safer materials is such an important step.

Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that interfere with your hormones—even at low levels. They can be found in everything from plastics to skincare to, yes, clothing. These disruptors have been linked to fertility issues, thyroid imbalance, developmental delays, and more. At Losano, we actively avoid materials known to contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals like BPA and phthalates.

PFAS (short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of “forever chemicals” that don’t break down in the environment or the human body. They’re often added to clothing to make it water- or stain-resistant—but they’ve been linked to serious health issues like hormone disruption, immune system damage, and even cancer. That’s why Losano is proudly PFAS-free.

PFAS are commonly used in the fashion industry to give clothing features like water resistance, oil repellency, or wrinkle resistance. But the tradeoff for those performance finishes is steep: long-term environmental harm and health risks for both makers and wearers. At Losano, we believe function shouldn’t come at the cost of safety, so we’ve eliminated PFAS from all of our fabrics.

BPA (bisphenol A) is a synthetic chemical that can disrupt your hormonal system—even in small amounts. It’s often added to polyester fabrics during the manufacturing process to improve things like color retention, softness, and durability. The problem? BPA can be absorbed through your skin, especially when your body heats up during wear. That’s why all of Losano’s fabrics are BPA-free—we believe high performance should never come at the cost of your health.

Unlike the plastic used in water bottles (which typically doesn’tcontain BPA), polyester fabrics can have BPA intentionally added during production. It’s used to enhance dye uptake, softness, and strength—but at a potential cost to your health. At Losano, we intentionally source and test our fabrics to ensure they’re100% free of BPA and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Because peace of mind should be part of your wardrobe.

Great question—because not all “eco” or “clean” claims mean the same thing. Here’s what to look for:

  • Third-party certifications like OEKO-TEX®, GOTS, or Bluesign®
  • Clear transparency around materials, production, and chemical safety
  • Avoid vague language like “natural” or “conscious” with no real backing

At Losano, we back up our claims with testing, traceability, and a commitment to endocrine-safe, PFAS-free, and BPA-free fabrics. No fluff—just facts.

Not necessarily. “Organic” usually refers to how a fiber was grown—like organic cotton—but it doesn’t guarantee what happens next. Dyes, finishes, and chemical treatments added during production can still introduce toxins, even to organic fabrics. To ensure something is truly non-toxic, look for additional certifications like OEKO-TEX® or brands (like us!) that are fully transparent about every step of the process.

Making the Switch

Start small and focus on what you wear the most. Think everyday staples like leggings, bras, underwear, and tees—especially anything that sits close to your skin. Look for brands (like Losano!) that prioritize certified-safe fabrics and transparent sourcing. You don’t have to overhaul everything at once—every intentional swap is a step in the right direction.

Start with next-to-skin essentials—things you wear often and sweat in, like:

  • Sports bras & underwear
  • Leggings
  • Everyday tanks and tees

These pieces have the most skin contact, so choosing non-toxic versions can have a bigger impact on your health and comfort.

It depends on the brand and fabric. Some non-toxic options—especially certain natural fibers—can lack the durability and stretch needed for activewear. At Losano, we blend technical innovation with health-forward fabric development, so you get comfort, stretch, recovery, and durability without the harmful chemicals. Our performance fabrics are designed to move with you, hold their shape, and last—without sacrificing safety.

Think quality over quantity and build slowly. Start with a few core pieces that you’ll wear often, and replace items as they wear out. Sign up for brand emails to access first-time buyer discounts (hey 👋), shop during sales, or consider secondhand pieces from trusted non-toxic brands. It’s not about perfection—it’s about progress.

Not always, but the two often go hand in hand. “Non-toxic” focuses on eliminating harmful chemicals for human safety, while “sustainable” considers the full environmental impact. At Losano, we’re committed to both—using safer, certified materials and designing with low-impact production methods, recycled fibers, and eco-conscious practices from start to finish.

ETHICAL PRODUCTION

At Losano, we work with ethical and responsible factories that prioritize fair wages, safe working conditions, and the wellbeing of their workers. We ensure that our manufacturing partners adhere to strict social and environmental standards, focusing on sustainable practices and transparent supply chains. These factories use safe chemicals, enforce labor rights, and respect the environment, ensuring that each piece is made with care from start to finish.

Our clothes are made in responsibly managed factorieslocated in ethical production regionsboth in the United States and around the world. We choose locations that have a proven track record of upholding fair labor practices, ensuring both the well-being of workers and the protection of the environment. By collaborating with these facilities, we can guarantee that our garments are produced under ethical and safe conditions, in line with Losano’s commitment to both people and the planet.

Our fabrics are sourced from sustainable mills and certified suppliers who meet our strict environmental and ethical standards. Many of our materials, such as recycled polyester and organic cotton, are produced in regions with strong sustainability practices. We work closely with our suppliers to ensure that the fibers we use are grown, processed, and manufactured using eco-friendly methods that support both environmental health and fair labor conditions.

At Losano, we are committed to the fair treatment and well-being of every person involved in the production of our clothing. Our guidelines for garment workers include:

  • Fair wages and safe working conditions in all factories.
  • Compliance with international labor laws and local regulations
  • No child labor or forced labor
  • Regular factory audits to ensure ethical practices are maintained.
  • A focus on worker empowerment, ensuring employees have access to their rights and are treated with dignity and respect. We are dedicated to transparency and ensuring that the people who make our clothes work in environments that promote respect, equality, and safety

Product & Fabric Questions

At Losano, we prioritize both comfort and sustainability. Our fabrics are carefully selected for their luxurious feel, durability, and performance—made with innovative, eco-friendly materials like recycled polyester and organic cotton. Whether it’s our breathable, stretchy athletic fabrics or our ultra-soft fleece, each piece is designed to perform without compromising your health or the planet. We focus on non-toxic, low-impact production processes to create fabrics that feel great and are better for the environment.

Losano fabrics are free from harmful chemicals like PFAS, BPA, and other endocrine disruptors, which are commonly found in conventional fabrics. We use OEKO-TEX® certified fabrics, meaning they’ve been tested for toxic substances and meet strict safety standards. Our commitment to non-toxic fabrics means you can feel good wearing Losano, knowing that each piece is safe for your skin and the planet.

Yes, Losano fabrics are free from BPA, PFAS, and other harmful chemicals commonly used in the textile industry. We use non-toxic materials and safe manufacturing processes, ensuring that your clothes are not only comfortable but also free from substances that could harm your health or the environment. Our fabrics are thoroughly tested to meet the highest safety and sustainability standards.

At Losano, sustainability is woven into every aspect of our fabric production. We prioritize recycled materials, such as recycled polyester made from water bottles, and natural fibers like organic cotton. Our fabrics are designed to be long-lasting and biodegradable where possible. We also work with manufacturing partners who share our commitment to ethical and low-impact practices, ensuring that the entire production process minimizes harm to the environment.

Losano’s performance fabrics are designed for both health and high-performance. Unlike many traditional activewear materials, our fabrics are made with non-toxic, eco-friendly materials like recycled polyester, and ensuring they’re free from harmful chemicals. They’re also more sustainable, offering superior stretch, recovery, and breathability without compromising on durability. Whether it’s for yoga, running, or lounging, our fabrics give you the same performance without the environmental impact.

Great question! The plastic found in water bottlesdoesn’t inherently containBPA or PFAS. These chemicals are typically added during the manufacturing process of certain types of polyester to enhance properties like durability, stain resistance, or color retention. At Losano, we choose to exclude these harmful chemicals from our production process. The plastic bottles we recycle are thoroughly cleaned and processed into fibers, which are then turned into fabrics that are completely free from BPA and PFAS. This means you can feel confident that your Losano items are eco-friendly and non-toxic, without sacrificing performance or durability.

Yes, our TenderBlend fleece is just as warm—if not warmer—than traditional fleece! Made from a luxurious blend of organic cotton, modal, and spandex, it’s designed to be soft, cozy, and incredibly insulating while still being lightweight and breathable. TenderBlend is perfect for layering or wearing on its own, offering all the warmth you expect from fleece without the harsh chemicals often found in conventional fabrics.

  • To keep your Losano pieces looking their best for longer, follow these care instructions:
  • Wash on a gentle cycle with cold water to preserve fabric integrity and reduce energy consumption.
  • Air dry your items or tumble dry on low heat to prevent shrinkage and preserve elasticity.
  • Avoid using fabric softeners or bleach, as they can break down the fabric and reduce its lifespan.

Our Materials

Lenzing Modal is a type of sustainable fabric made from beechwood trees. The wood is harvested from responsibly managed forests, and the fibers are processed in an environmentally friendly way. Modal is known for its softness, breathability, and smooth texture, making it a luxurious choice for clothing. It's also biodegradable and produced with a lower environmental footprint compared to traditional fabrics, making it an eco-friendly option for everyday wear.

Micro Modal is a finer, more refined version of Lenzing Modal. It is made from the same beechwood trees but is processed to create ultra-soft fibers that are thinner and lighter than regular Modal. The result is a luxuriously smooth fabric that feels incredibly soft against the skin. Micro Modal also offers superior breathability, moisture-wicking properties, and a silky texture, while being just as sustainable as Modal.

Supima Cotton is a premium variety of cotton grown exclusively in the U.S. It’s known for its extra-long staple fibers, which make it stronger, softer, and more durable than regular cotton. Supima cotton is also more resistant to fading, shrinking, and pilling, making it a high-quality, long-lasting fabric. This cotton is grown using sustainable practices and is ethically sourced, which makes it a fantastic option for eco-conscious consumers.

Combed organic cotton is organic cotton that has been specially processed to remove short fibers and impurities, leaving behind only the long, strong fibers. The result is a fabric that is smoother, softer, and stronger than standard cotton. The organic cotton is grown without harmful pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, making it a more environmentally friendly and safer option for both the wearer and the planet.

Recycled Polyester is made from post-consumer plastic waste, such as discarded plastic bottles, or post-industrial polyester waste. The process of recycling these materials into fabric helps reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in landfills and oceans. By using recycled polyester, we give plastic a second life, reducing the need for virgin polyester and minimizing the overall environmental impact of polyester production. It’s a sustainable alternative that doesn’t compromise on quality or performance.

Recycled Nylon is a sustainable fabric made by repurposing discarded nylon products, such as fabric scraps or used fishing nets. It’s part of the circular economy, reducing waste and giving nylon a second life. By using recycled nylon, we help reduce the environmental impact of nylon production, which traditionally requires significant resources. The fabric still maintains the durability, stretch, and performance of new nylon, but with a much smaller carbon footprint.

REPREVE is a brand of recycled fibers made from post-consumer plastic bottles, textile waste, and other recycled materials. It’s one of the world’s leading sustainable fiber brands, committed to reducing waste and conserving resources. REPREVE fibers are highly durable, versatile, and can be used in a wide range of fabrics, from activewear to ready-to-wear. By using REPREVE, we help reduce plastic waste and give plastic a new life, turning it into products that are both functional and eco-friendly.

Fabric Certifications

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is a globally recognized certification for textiles. It ensures that every component of a product—from fabric and thread to buttons and labels—has been tested for harmful substances and meets strict safety criteria. This certification is important because it provides peace of mind that the textiles you use are free from chemicals that could pose risks to your health, such as formaldehyde, heavy metals, and PFAS. By choosing OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified products, you’re prioritizing safety, sustainability, and a healthier lifestyle.

bluesign® certification is a globally recognized standard that ensures textiles are produced with minimal environmental impact, responsible resource use, and safety for workers and consumers. It focuses on every step of the supply chain, from raw material sourcing to finished products, addressing water and energy conservation, chemical safety, and waste management. This certification is crucial in apparel because it signifies a commitment to sustainability and transparency. Products with bluesign® approval meet high standards for reduced environmental impact and safe, non-toxic materials, making them better for the planet and your health. Choosing bluesign® certified apparel means supporting ethical practices and contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the leading certification for organic fibers and textiles. It ensures that products are made with a minimum of 70% organic fibers and meet strict environmental and social criteria throughout the supply chain. GOTS certification covers everything from the raw material to the final product, ensuring that no toxic chemicals are used in production and that workers are treated fairly and ethically.

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certification is a global standard that ensures that products are made from responsibly managed forests. FSC certification guarantees that the wood, paper, or other forest-based materials used in a product come from forests that are sustainably managed, protecting biodiversity, and supporting the livelihoods of local communities. It also ensures that the supply chain is transparent and that products can be traced back to their responsible source.

GRS (Global Recycled Standard) is an international certification that verifies the recycled content in a product and ensures that it has been sourced responsibly. GRS not only evaluates the amount of recycled material used but also the social and environmental practices of the manufacturing process. This standard helps reduce waste and promotes the use of recycled materials, which is key to creating a more sustainable, circular economy in fashion.

The Higg Index is a sustainability measurement tool used in the fashion industry to assess the environmental and social impact of products and companies. It covers everything from materials sourcing to manufacturing, transportation, and end-of-life disposal. Brands use the Higg Index to measure and improve their sustainability performance across the supply chain, helping them make data-driven decisions to reduce their overall environmental footprint.

Sustainability & Ethics

At Losano, we believe in making fashion that doesn’t cost the earth. We minimize our environmental impact by focusing on sustainable practices across every step of our process—from sourcing eco-friendly fabrics like organic cotton, recycled materials, and biodegradable fibers to reducing waste in packaging and manufacturing. We also work with certified, ethical partners who share our commitment to sustainability, ensuring every piece you wear is part of a cleaner, greener future.

Losano products are designed with care and crafted by ethical manufacturing partners both in the United States around the world. We work with factories that prioritize sustainable practices, fair wages, and safe working conditions. Our commitment to transparency means we carefully vet all of our partners to ensure they align with our values of responsibility and ethical production.

Yes! Many of our fabrics are made with recycled materials, including recycled polyester from plastic bottles, to help reduce waste and give new life to materials that would otherwise end up in landfills. We are always looking for innovative ways to incorporate more recycled and low-impact materials into our collection to ensure that our clothing has as little environmental footprint as possible.

Ethical manufacturing is at the core of everything we do. We partner with factories that are committed to providing fair wages, safe working conditions, and treating workers with respect and dignity. We also ensure our manufacturing processes are free from harmful chemicals, prioritizing the health and safety of the workers who create our products. Our goal is to bring you high-quality pieces that make you feel good, inside and out.

Microplastic pollution is a major concern in the fashion industry, and we’re actively working to minimize our impact. Our athletic fabrics are made from recycled polyester sourced from plastic water bottles—plastic that, if left unrecycled, would degrade into microplastics in our oceans and landfills. By using plastic that already exists in the world, we’re giving it a second life instead of contributing to pollution. We also encourage responsible washing, using tools like Guppyfriend bags or microfiber filters to capture any fibers released during washing. Through these efforts, we aim to reduce microplastic pollution and continue improving our practices with every collection.

Daily Habits & Care

Start by choosing brands (like Losano!) that use non-toxic, certified-safe fabrics free from harmful chemicals like BPA, PFAS, and endocrine disruptors. Look for OEKO-TEX® or GOTS certifications when possible. You can also reduce exposure by avoiding clothing labeled “stain-resistant,” “wrinkle-free,” or “moisture-wicking” — they often contain added chemical treatments. Washing new clothes before wearing them is another simple step to help remove residual finishes or dyes.

Yes — to an extent. Washing can help remove surface-level residues and finishes from conventional clothing, especially if it hasn’t been pre-washed. However, if the fabric itself contains harmful chemicals (like PFAS or certain flame retardants), washing won’t fully eliminate those. That’s why starting with non-toxic, consciously made pieces — like Losano’s — is key.

We recommend using fragrance-free, non-toxic, and biodegradable detergents — ideally ones labeled EWG Verified, or certified by organizations like EcoCert or USDA BioPreferred. Avoid products with synthetic fragrances, optical brighteners, and harsh preservatives. Some of our favorites include:

  • Branch Basics
  • Attitude Living
  • Truly Free Home
  • Meliora
  • The Simply Co.

These gentle formulas help preserve your clothing while keeping your skin (and the planet) happy.

Small shifts in your daily habits make a big difference:

  • Wash cold & line dry to save energy and preserve fabric life.
  • Use microplastic filters (like a Guppyfriend bag or a Cora Ball) to prevent synthetic fibers from polluting waterways.
  • Spot clean when possible to reduce water and detergent usage.
  • Mend and repair instead of tossing garments for minor damage.
  • Donate, resell, or recycle responsibly when you’re ready to part with a piece.

By choosing quality over quantity and caring for your clothing intentionally, you extend its life and reduce waste.
