5 Wellness Habits That Made the Biggest Difference in My 50s (And Still Do)

Posted by STACIA GRAFFIA on

If someone had told me in my 30s that my 50s would be some of my most vibrant, self-assured years, I might’ve smiled politely and thought, “Sure, we’ll see.” Back then, wellness felt like something to squeeze in when there was time—an afterthought, not a lifestyle. I was juggling family, relationships, and a never-ending to-do list, all while putting myself somewhere near the bottom of the priorities list.

But here I am, firmly planted in my 50s, and I’ve never felt more grounded or more connected to what true wellness really means. It’s not about chasing the latest trends or pushing your body to extremes. It’s about finding simple, sustainable habits that nourish you—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

These five practices have made the biggest difference for me—and they continue to shape how I show up in my life, day after day.

1. Daily Movement—Even If It’s Just a Walk

In my younger years, I believed movement had to be intense to “count.” If I wasn’t sweating buckets or completely wiped out after a workout, I wasn’t doing enough.

That mindset didn’t serve me for long. In my 50s, I’ve learned that the most powerful form of movement is the kind you actually do—regularly and joyfully.

Some days it’s strength training. Other days it’s a long walk with a podcast or a few gentle stretches between meetings. I’ve stopped trying to prove anything to anyone and started moving simply because it feels good. It resets my mind, keeps my joints happy, and connects me to my breath.

And yes, doing it all in soft, breathable Losano pieces helps—it’s one less barrier between me and my body’s needs.

2. Prioritizing Sleep (and Actually Winding Down)

Sleep has become sacred in my 50s. The days of pushing through with five hours and extra coffee are long gone—and thankfully so. I no longer see rest as indulgent. I see it as foundational.

What changed for me was creating a real wind-down routine. I stopped scrolling before bed, started dimming the lights after dinner, and carved out quiet time to let my body and mind slow down. I even keep my favorite nighttime layers—soft, breathable, cozy—within arm’s reach as part of the ritual.

The result? Better sleep, more even energy during the day, and a calmer nervous system overall. It’s a domino effect, and it starts with one clear signal to my body: it’s time to rest.

3. Wearing Breathable, Comfortable Clothes That Support Me

In my 50s, I’ve let go of the idea that you have to choose between looking polished and feeling comfortable. Why not have both?

The truth is, when you’re wearing clothes that are soft, breathable, and thoughtfully designed, you feel more present in your own skin. That matters—especially when you’re navigating hormonal changes, evolving body rhythms, and the day-to-day demands of modern life.

At Losano, we’ve poured intention into every piece we create, because we believe that how you feel in your clothing directly affects how you show up in the world. Comfort isn’t a luxury. It’s a wellness practice in its own right.

4. Drinking More Water and Reducing Sugar

I know—this one sounds basic. But the difference it’s made? Huge.

Hydration became non-negotiable in my 50s. I noticed how easily fatigue crept in when I wasn’t drinking enough water, and how sugar crashes could throw off my entire day. So I started small: a big glass of water first thing in the morning, keeping a bottle nearby all day, and even turning to my favorite water enhancers when I need the extra motivation. I'm also paying attention to the sugar hidden in snacks and sauces. I much rather "spend" the sugar on something I will appreciate, like my mom's famous chocolate chip cookies, than that random bottle of barbeque sauce in the back of my fridge.

I still enjoy my treats (and trust me I LOVE a sweet treat), but I’ve become more mindful about how they make me feel. Choosing more whole, hydrating, nourishing foods has helped me feel clearer, steadier, and more in tune with my body. My aura ring keeps me accountable too - not only can I feel the difference, but I can literally see how eating healthier improves my stats! And making healthy swaps when I do have a craving doesn't hurt either!

It’s not about restriction. It’s about support.

5. Starting My Day with Purpose (and Yes, That Includes Getting Dressed)

One of the most underestimated wellness shifts I made in my 50s had nothing to do with food or fitness—it was how I start my day. And no, I’m not talking about a rigid morning routine with journaling, green juice, and sunrise yoga (unless that’s your thing).

For me, it was about infusing my mornings with just a little more intention.

Instead of waking up and diving straight into emails, I began giving myself 10–15 quiet minutes. Sometimes I stretch, sometimes I sit with my coffee in silence, sometimes I mentally set an intention for how I want to feel that day.

And yes—getting dressed is a big part of that ritual. It signals to my brain (and heart): this day matters. I matter. Even if I’m not seeing anyone but my dog, putting on something soft, supportive, and thoughtfully designed helps me feel grounded and awake.

It’s not about impressing anyone. It’s about showing up for myself with care.

This one small act has helped me feel more centered, more capable, and more connected to the rhythm of my life.

The Bigger Picture

One of the biggest gifts of my 50s has been perspective. I’ve stopped chasing perfection, and started honoring what works for me. Wellness isn’t a one-size-fits-all routine—it’s a relationship with yourself. And like any good relationship, it thrives on care, presence, and trust.

These habits—moving daily, protecting my sleep, dressing with intention, drinking water, and choosing comfort—have become anchors in my life. They’re not revolutionary. They’re not trendy. But they are sustainable, and that’s what makes them powerful.

So if you’re in your 50s (or on your way there), I hope this reminds you: it’s never too late to feel better in your body. You don’t need a total transformation. You just need to start listening in, and honoring what you hear.

Health & Happiness,
Staci
