Why We Use Recycled Nylon (And What Makes Ours Different)

Nylon is one of those materials that often gets a side-eye in sustainability conversations. It’s synthetic. It’s plastic. It’s been historically linked to fast fashion. So we get it—at first glance, nylon might not seem like the kind of fabric you'd expect from a brand rooted in clean values.

But here’s the thing: not all nylon is created equal—and when it’s recycled, non-toxic, and purposefully chosen, it can play a powerful role in building a better, lower-impact wardrobe.

First, What Is Nylon?

Nylon is a man-made fiber originally developed in the 1930s as a replacement for silk. It’s lightweight, strong, stretchy, quick-drying, and incredibly durable—which is why it’s used in everything from athleticwear to outerwear to lingerie.

Traditionally, nylon is made from petroleum, and producing it can be energy-intensive. That’s why we avoid virgin nylon entirely.

What Makes Recycled Nylon Better?

Recycled nylon is typically made by taking waste—like discarded fishing nets, fabric scraps, or industrial plastic—and giving it a second life through a closed-loop process. The result? A high-performance fiber with a significantly smaller environmental footprint.

At Losano, we use only certified recycled nylon, and here’s why it matters:

  • It reduces waste by turning pollution into product.

  • It cuts down on fossil fuels since it doesn’t require drilling for new resources.

  • It performs just like virgin nylon, without the same environmental cost.

Is Recycled Nylon Still “Plastic”? Yes. And That’s Not Always Bad.

We’re transparent about this: recycled nylon is still a plastic-based fiber. But we take a two-pronged approach to the plastic issue:

  1. We never use virgin plastic. Not in our fabrics, not in our packaging. Full stop.

  1. We focus on giving existing plastics a second life. If we don’t recycle the plastic already polluting our planet, it doesn’t disappear—it just degrades into microplastics in landfills and oceans faster.

By transforming waste into high-functioning fabrics, we’re helping slow the spread of plastic pollution—without compromising on quality or comfort.

What About Toxins in Nylon?

Great question—and one we take seriously.

Many conventional nylons (and recycled ones too) can be treated with finishes that include PFAS, BPA, and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals. At Losano, we’ve done the work to ensure our fabrics are free from all of them. Every fiber we use is rigorously tested and certified to meet the highest safety standards.

Certifications That Back It Up

Our recycled nylon is certified by:

  • Global Recycled Standard (GRS) – Verifying recycled content and ethical processing.

  • OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 – Confirming our fabrics are tested and cleared of harmful substances.

So when we say our nylon is clean, we mean it.

The Bottom Line

At Losano, we don’t chase perfection—we focus on better choices. Recycled nylon helps us make pieces that perform beautifully, last longer, and reduce harm along the way. It’s a fabric that supports movement, comfort, and circularity—all values that matter to us, and to you.
