Why We Use Organic Cotton (and What Makes Ours Better Than “Just Organic”)

Cotton is everywhere—but not all cotton is created equal.
At Losano, we only use GOTS-certified organic cotton that’s grown, harvested, and processed with both your skin and the planet in mind.

So let’s unpack what that really means, why conventional cotton doesn’t cut it, and how organic cotton fits into our commitment to clean, non-toxic fashion.

What Is Organic Cotton, Really?

Organic cotton is cotton grown without synthetic pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, or GMOs. Instead, it’s cultivated using methods that promote biodiversity, healthy soil, and safe working conditions for farmers.

Key differences from conventional cotton:

  • No chemical defoliants or fertilizers

  • Grown with less water and energy

  • Often picked and processed in safer conditions for workers

But just because something’s labeled “organic” doesn’t mean it’s fully clean. The certifications matter—and so does what happens after harvest.

Why GOTS Certification Matters

At Losano, we don’t just use organic cotton—we use GOTS-certified organic cotton. That means:

  • It’s verified from seed to final fabric (not just the farming stage)

  • Every step in the supply chain is held to strict environmental and social standards

  • No toxic bleaches, azo dyes, or finishing agents are allowed

  • Workers are protected and paid fairly

That’s what sets true organic cotton apart from products that throw “organic” on the label without backing it up.

Is Cotton Always Non-Toxic?

Surprisingly, no. Even natural fabrics can be full of hidden chemicals—especially during processing.

Conventional cotton is often treated with:

  • Formaldehyde-based resins (to prevent wrinkles)

  • Silicone and heavy-metal dyes

  • Optical brighteners (to make it look “clean” white)

  • Anti-microbial or stain-resistant finishes (often PFAS-based)

That’s why we don’t just care about what a fabric is—we care about how it’s processed.

At Losano, our organic cotton:

  • Is processed without PFAS, BPA, formaldehyde, or phthalates

  • Is OEKO-TEX® certified for skin safety

  • Is blended only with Lenzing™ Modal or clean spandex in specific styles

Why Organic Cotton Is a Staple at Losano

We believe basics should be both better for the planet and better for your body.

Organic cotton is:

  • Naturally breathable

  • Durable and long-lasting

  • Biodegradable at the end of its life

  • Gentle on sensitive skin (especially when certified non-toxic)

When used right, it becomes a cornerstone of modern, feel-good fashion.

Common Questions About Organic Cotton

Is organic cotton more sustainable than synthetic fabrics?
It depends on what you’re measuring. Organic cotton:

  • Uses less water than conventional cotton

  • Doesn’t pollute waterways with agrochemicals

  • Supports regenerative agriculture
But it can still require land, labor, and energy—so we choose it when it’s the right tool for the job, and always source the cleanest, most traceable version.

Does organic cotton shrink or pill?
Ours is pre-shrunk during processing and knit with durability in mind. The quality of the cotton and construction make a big difference—and we prioritize both.

Is organic cotton soft?
Absolutely—but not all organic cotton is created equal. We choose premium-staple fibers that are smoother, softer, and more durable than basic cotton yarns.

The Bottom Line

It’s better for your body. Better for the planet. And when blended with our other clean materials, it’s the kind of fabric that makes you feel good about getting dressed.
